Back in 1996 our father Werner Näkel began producing wine in post-Apartheid South Africa. The first magnum bottle of his red wine cuvee “Zwalu”, which means “new beginning”, was presented to Nelson Mandela upon his first visit to Germany. Thus “Zwalu” and the second wine “Z” have for years enjoyed cult status – as have their younger siblings: the Chardonnay and the Shiraz “Us de Kap”. To coincide with this year’s vintage, we have given both of these a new look, which even at first glance conveys that South African feeling and pleasure in drinking. Just as the wines themselves do. The “newspaper” here serves not only as stylish packaging, but also tells the story of our wines from the Cape. Gesondheid!
